Florida-Friendly Plant of the Week

Ostrya virginiana, American Hophornbeam, American Hornbeam

This beautiful tree is listed in The Florida-Friendly Landscaping Guide to Plant Selection & Landscape Design. It is a native tree, and grows in zones 8-9a. Hernando County is considered Horticultural Zone 9. It is a slow growing tree, and has medium to high wind resistance. At full maturity, it will reach 10-30 feet in length and can stretch out 15-30 feet in diameter.  It performs best in soil with a pH of 4.5 - 7.2.  It prefers well drained soil, and has a high tolerance for drought conditions. It is happy in a variety of light conditions, such as full sun, partial sun or shade. It has little to no salt tolerance. This tree provides habitat for birds as well as providing nuts for wildlife. One of the best features of this native is that the leaves will color up and give us a taste of Fall. (Fall being a relative term in Florida and not necessarily occurring in October.)
